Well, as title states, I can't get SP1 to install. It fails with error 0x80070002. That is all the info I have on it right now, but I can get more if anybody is willing to help out. I have tried several different times, with different circumstances, and still no go. I even reinstalled a fresh copy of Vista, and still won't work. By the way, it is Vista Home Premium x64.

This is my exact error.

Once I reinstalled Vista, the only thing I installed was my chipset drivers, sound and video card drivers. And then I ran Windows Update. So, from a fresh install, I still get this error. I never had this problem with XP SP2. Why release a service pack, if users can't install it?

perhaps it is an issue with your hardware configuration in your BIOS. perhaps fiddle with HDD settings. just a shot in the dark though.

Well, after reading up, it might be my disk. I made an unattended install disk, with my product key already entered. I didn't change anything else, though. But, that could be my problem... But, my Vista installation was originally a 32 bit, but after talking with someone at MS, I was told that my product key would work for either 32 or 64 bit. So, I borrowed a friends 64 bit disk, and made an unattended with my product key, and everything has worked fine. So far. Until now. But, my system is activated, no problems there. So, I am at a loss for answers. I have read through countless forums of people having the same problem, but still no answers. I thought it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and post it up here.

Well, I emailed Microsoft about the problem last night, and as of 7:09pm today, I still haven't heard anything back.

Don't you love that, you tell them in your first message everything you have tried, then, when they do help you, they list off everything you have done like you are stupid enough to never have tried that? They do it to me all the time. :banghead:

Use one stick of ram during installation. Use one of your 512mb sticks.

I know it sounds stupid but one time Asus tech support told me it when I was having a hell of a time and it worked. There is a flaw in the installer they said.

The sticks weren't bad of course they passed memtest and prime95 memory torture tests.

I thought about that. Pulling my overclock back down, and ditching some ram. In which case, I had to get rid of 1gb of my ram. It sucks.

You got rid of it so your OC was more stable?

No, when I sold my old computer, the guy wanted to get ram. And since I plan on upgrading soon, I sold him my 2x 512.

I pulled all but one stick of ram out, and de-overclocked my system. Tried running SP1, still a no-go. And still waiting to hear from MS tech support. Who knows how long that will take. Oh, well. If I get it figured out, I will post again. Good night to all of you.
