Anyway to format and portion a drive while in windows?

I just got my new Seagate 250gb 7200.10RPM WOO. Now I only have 2 SATA cables so I cant have the WD, Seagate and my DVD drive hooked up at the same time

so I need a way to portion and format in windows. Thanks!

For my partitioning needs, I always use GParted.

controlpanel > administative tools > computer management > on left tab, storage > disk management.

Right click the partitioned drive and click Format...windows has a format utility built in (if you've ever formatted a floppy diskette...same thing).

And I'm sure that partition program probably has some sort of format utility...I used to use Partition Magic and it had a format utility...the built-in Windows one is just as good as any tho.

ooh ok I got it. Is that number in MB or KB? How much is 38mb? Why does it read 238gb in the first place?

I suggest using either Partition Magic or Acronis Disk director.
both are very good.

you can partition, resize existin partitions, moving partitions, split and merge partition, format...
in Acronis Disk Director you can also clone one disk to another.

Everything will read in MB, so 10000MB = 10gb, I have used partition magic and Acronis and both seem to work well, you can use in windows, then reboot.

Tae that back, not sure what they read in the disk management tab.

What I did was I unplugged my old HDD with the ASUS DVD and Seagate hooked up. Made a 50gb partion for windows/drivers and a 200gb(X: DRIVE, THE X IS FOR XTREME) partion for games and music etc.

i got the 160gb one, good drive, only i dont have main os on it at the mo

This is too late I know, but a tip for the future. If you want to do operations within Windows I've found out that Western Digital Lifeguard does the job just fine, and it's free! Of course, I prefer gparted over anything else, but that requires a boot cd or Live-CD.
