4850 & new CPU or 4870 or 4850 &WC

I am considering a 4850 and a Tri core CPU maybe a Quad. I think a 4870 would be bottlenecked vary badly by my X2.

Should i just get a 4870 anyways and run it with my X2@3ghz?

The other thing i was condiering was Watercool the CPU and buy a 4850

The last thing was buy a 9800GTX OR a 4850 and a new mobo

So option 1 2 3 or 4? what one would give me the best upgrade

If you pick the 4850 and the mobo then please link me to a good mobo that will overclock and support the quad and tri cores. I don't care if it is SLI/Crossire or not. Can be ATI or nvidia chipset. Please try to keep it kinda cheap

I would do a 4850 and a new motherboard for now, especially if your current mobo isn't a good overclocker.

You have pretty much the best AMD cpu so I say 4870

X2 5000+ was bootlenecking my 3870 so yes the 4870 is alot faster

i went from 60fps to 100fps in TF2 when i just changed to phenom 9850

im not going to go off on a INtel fan boy thing so don't worry.. but if you want performance switch to intel, and get a 4870

I would but i don't have the money and some of my friends bought AMD just so they could compete with my amd

gotcha. then option 2

a quad/tri core wont help that much. just look at the 3k 3dmark thread. that may help you judge a little better. BUT in vantage for example its more gpu usage than cpu usage.

I am liking the 4870 but keep in mind my mobo also isn't a vary good clocker with this chip overclocked good with the x2 4600 and Sempron 3200+ but not my BE even with latest BIOS but still will run 3ghz

You should get a 19'' widescreen and a 4850 actually.. I used to have a 15'' standard screen and the 19'' wide makes a world of difference with a small performance kill.
1024x768 = 1792 pixels, 1440x900 = 2340 pixels.

i say 4850 + cpu.

mainly because i'm in the same boat with my oc'd 6400+ and 3870, i think a 9850BE would be the best thing to do first.

I say 4870 because CPU bottleneck is a minor issue.

In games that it'll perform well in, it will still get over 100fps. A stronger CPU might add 20ish, but is that a big deal when you're already getting that many frames? If the card struggles with a game, a new CPU would add minuscule performance differences. Why blow so much money on a CPU that will add less than a stronger card?

Whichever choice you make, happy gaming!

If you get the 4870, you'll like it more than a 4850 and a new CPU. Plus, you can always get the new CPU later and add a little bit more to your fun.

And if you're getting a new monitor, 1440x900 would probably be the ideal widescreen resolution for budget - midrange gaming. 4870 can handle it well. :3

When i get a new screen it is going to be a 20"wide or bigger. I am going to put a new screen on hold

Will your current motherboard take a Phenom? Right now, do you OC your 5000+ BE just by upping the multiplier?

Get a 4850 and save up your cash for a bigger monitor

If you go 20'' or higher then the cpu wont be doing much anyway!

I overclock my BE by multiplier and bus multi.14x bus 216

4870 and 9850 IMO. Save the extra $100 and get the best of both worlds.

Actually that's not true. The larger the monitor the less pixels it tends to have, and size alone doesn't measure the difficulty the card will have pushing the game. Whether it's 1440x900 on an 18inch or 1440x900 on a 100inch, the performance will be the same.

It also makes no sense to tell someone to get a weaker card and a new monitor with a higher resolution.

I still think you'd benefit from a better card. Look at some benches with weaker processors between the two cards at low resolutions. (Probably hard to find right now) I bet you a 4870 with your current processor will outperform a 4850 with a better one.

Whichever you pick, have fun. :3
