HD 4850 Naked (New Cooler added) Zalman VF900 CU
OK, so I got my HD 4850 today, and before i even turned it on I stripped her naked and threw on a new dress. I have kind of step by step pics for you. They suck a duck cause they were off my iphone, my real cameras battery was dead. Anywho. It turned out great, the only thing you will see in the last pic, I circled the points I am going to add some Ram sinks to tomorrow when the store is open again. But im at 700 core at a breezy 33 degrees.

![]() And is it possible to cut the thing off the stock cooler that covers the transistor things

Hehe thanks. From all the reviews I heard about it, I figured this was going to have to be one of the first things done. Trust me I was nervous. The thermal pads were still new, so they were sticky and the heat sink did not wanna quite come off. At least not as easy as im used to.

Just make sure you get some extra ram sinks. The zalman fan was able to plug right into my MB and with ABit uguru , I can control fan speed.

Easy on the OCing untill you have sinks on those VRM's! In GPU-Z there are three temperatures. The 2nd one is the VRM temps I believe. Anyways, two ram sinks work well to cool them. I also threw some sinks on the mosfets, though it's probablly unessecary.

Not yet, I just got it this afternoon. My pc just finished getting up and running. The only overclock I have done so far was max out ATI Overdrive on the core. Not doing Ram yet until i get my other ram sinks. But i will keep it updated.

It's a Gigabyte V-powered cooler. I bought it from a reviewer and haven't seen it in retail anywhere. It idles around 33c at room temp. Here's a better pic:

Ahh, to answer your question. Its part of the stock cooler. Its all one piece. I guess you could, but then you destroy the stock cooler in case you wanted to sell it. Its cheaper to get some $5 ram sinks.

Cover those MOSFETS ASAP, I almost killed an X1950 pro when I voltmodded it and forgot to cool them. Don't bother with the chokes (grey rectangles), cooling those is pointless because essentially all it is a coil of copper wire wrapped around metal.

Guys, i found this. Apparently Asus does not see the need to cool the VRM's?

Hehe, was just thinking the same thing. I get a chuckle out of people who tear apart packaging with grubby, sweating fingers, and then proceed to dismantle, rebuild, tweak, overclock and stress their components before they even find out if it's DOA, damaged or malfunctioning. Kinda neat looking cooler though. Shame about the VGA sinks. Those things are perilous when using their standard sticky films.

Nice use of the word perilous, kudos for that, but perhaps referring to his fingers as 'grubby, sweating' might come across as a bit dismissive so points off for that
![]() It's true that getting those RAM heatsinks to stick the first time is unnerving, if you don't press them for a long time they can fall off making it seem they are flimsily connected, but once they are stuck on I found they stay on well enough. Zalman also sells(sold?) a 2 component heatsink heat-transferring epoxy adhesive though (often available for a relatively low price if you can find it) and that stuff is tough I can tell you, you better not plan to remove them after using that. Experts advise you to use a rubber eraser to clean off residue from the RAM chips before applying the stick-on ones, because anything that's left won't allow them to stick and it's hard to clean them good. Congratulations Cybrnook2002, I think that your HD 4850 will stay clearly better cooled now. I'm going to purchase an HD4850 too, and I want to use on it my old Zalman VF900. I was thinking about trying to install a Heatshink from a Mobo into the VRMs/Mosfets zone, attaching it to the pcb using the mounting holes and using AS5. Could anybody tell me the dimensions of the area harboring VRMs/Mosfets and the distance between the mounting holes that uses the retail heatshink to cover this area? With the requested information, I'll try to find a Mobo Heatshink that fits on this area and I'll post If I success.
Thx so much in advance. |

Sohaimaster, I looked intot his a little more after i did my mod. You dont need to cool the VRM's. Only the Mosfets. If you notice with your stick cooler, there is another VRM at the top of the card almost in the middle that is not cooled. I believe that the VRM's in the back are cooled only by sheer placement as they are "EN-route" with the stoack cooler design. The important part to cool is the Mosfets in my opinion. Another funny thing I found, do a google searach for images of the ASUS 1GB version of the 4850, they dont even cover/cool the VRM's or the mosfets. Thought that was interesting. Makes me wonder if its really needed. However, i will leave my ramsinks on as they are already there. But the Mosfets I believe are the important part. heres the asus: http://www.overclock.net/hardware-ne...glaciator.html |
