Hi, I stumbled across the settings in the bios of my lovely new asus motherboard for the PCIe
settings!! I twiddled a setting or two, restarted and DAMN THATS COOL!!!

Previously it would do 155fps avg not overclocked, and 180fps avg overclocked to 447/547

Now it does 184fps avg not overclocked and 205fps avg overclocked!!!!!!!

Dunno if there's the option on all motherboards, but if you're looking to unlock some more performance without overclocking or increasing temps, i recomend you look into this!

Anyway, thought i'd tell the world how happy i am with my new Club3D X800XL!!

lol, sorry for leaving you in the dark there.

DAMN... After i managed to get 200+ out of it, i found some other settings, and got 225fps avg out of it... decided to go back into the bios to play some more... and lost the settings  I've still got the 200+ out of it tho, so i guess it's not a complete loss. The strange thing is, after doing this, i expected the temperatures to rise, but they stayed exacly where they were when this thing was running at 170fps. This makes me think that the PCIe slot is actually restricting this card.

Anyway, the settings i played with are as follows:

Peg Link Mode: 'Faster'
available options: [Auto][Slow][Normal][Fast][Faster]

Peg Buffer Length: 'Long'
available options: [Auto][Short][Long]

Hyper Path 3: 'Enabled'
available options: [auto][Enabled][Dissabled]

Peg is short for 'PCI-Express Graphics' btw.
The Peg link mode is basically the speed the motherboard makes the PCIe slot to run at.
Hyper path 3 is ASUS's way of stopping bottlenecks, so helping the graphics perform at their best.
There was 1 other option, but i can't remember what it's called. I'll edit this post when i find out

Are there any specific 3dtests you want me to do?

Good luck everyone.

EDIT:

Just updated drivers, now giving me 212fps with ATITool! =D This graphics card is a jem!

hmm, that's a shame :shadedshu you could be right. It worked wanders for me. I'm just wandering if there's any other way you can adjust the PCIe Settings from a windows environment. Might be worth asking W1zzard if he knows anything about this. Perhaps he could make a small program which would be awsome! :D .(I'm probably dreaming here tho! )

Ok, just got round to doing the 3Dmark05 Benchmark, though i couldn't really be bothered to bring back all the default settings in the bios. Here's what i got:

Default clocks (400/490)
Overclocked (444.27/549.80 (both a couple of mhz from max))

Default: 5400 points
O/Ced: 5942 points

With 3dmark03, I got:

O/Ced: 12655 points

Can you post the results of your x800xl's so we can compare? Should be interesting.

Sounds to me like it just increased the PCI-E bus from 100.Any halfway decent mobo can do that?

um... he just tweaked some of the settings in the bios... which have been around a while.... and overclocking the pcie bus doesnt yield such results anyways ;)

check your PCI-E bus...if its over 100 its overclocking it!

If you want to doubt me, go right ahead, but you wont get far.

Overclocking the PCI-E bus is completely different from overclocking the fsb, which he likely is doing.

FSB is the link between the cpu and memory controller. This is used to determine cpu speed using a multiplier such as 14, so 14x200fsb = 2800mhz. increasing the fsb will in turn ofcourse raise the cpu speed. This also raises the memory speed if it is set to 1:1, and using a divider it will raise slower, such as 5:4.

The PCI-E bus is much like the AGP bus. Its a seperate pathway for data, which is tied into the northbridge, but the only relation to the fsb is the ability to either run it out of sync, overclocking it, and keeping it at a locked speed. Motherbards that are unable to lock the PCI-E and AGP busses generally have poor overclockability. Such as the KT400 for AMD's. It has great overclockability chipset wise, but its lack of pci lock limited it to no more than a potential of 220fsb because the bus would run so far out of spec.

Overclocking the PCI-E bus yields similar results. Although, even if it is stable overclocked, there is no significant performance boost, because the video card does not even begin to get close to fullfilling its data transfer capabilities. You would only achieve a slight decrease in overall bus latency, which is unnoticable, and will leave your system unstable.

Now, if you wish to believe he's overclocking his pci-e bus and maintaining that kind of performance increase, go look it up.. ;)

Welcome to the world of tweaking.. :) I think asus has their AI thing.. which auto overclocks the fsb I think.. you may have enabled that.. ;)

Google CPU-z and use it to show your FSB and cpu speed and see if it matches. if it is, fire up a program that uses the cpu intensivly, such as prime95, and double check to see if its overclocking based on load. that will tell you if your fsb is auto overclocking. :)

I've dissabled AINos, the auto overclocking feature as i like to have complete control over what's going on! (i'm strange like that) Hang on a sec while i find that cpu-z screenie i took recently...

I think you're probably right that the fsb is making a difference. At the mo it's @ 1ghz. God knows what the memory timings are, I know very little about the memory, i just used the o/c profiles for the memory and found a stable setting (which i can't remember now) :p

LOL, as you can probably tell, this is the first rig i've had that i can tweak... The family PC downstairs is a Dell... :(

This motherboard is awsome!!!!! I've been playing with it for almost a month now and there's still settings i havn't looked at! :D

cool, what are the differnces between the x800xl and the x1800xl? Very nice 3dmark score! :D

Thanks for your input jjnissanpatfan, I guess you could have a play with flashing bioses, just make sure you do a backup of the original first, and if you do come across a bios that works well, be sure to inform us! :)

btw, was your 3dmark score at default clocks or overclocked?

cool, what are the differnces between the x800xl and the x1800xl? Very nice 3dmark score! :D

Thanks for your input jjnissanpatfan, I guess you could have a play with flashing bioses, just make sure you do a backup of the original first, and if you do come across a bios that works well, be sure to inform us! :)

btw, was your 3dmark score at default clocks or overclocked?

7300 is at defaults
9200 is overclocked

:nutkick: My card just got it's ass kicked!

I've been looking at the memory settings in ATITool with a furrowed brow... can you help me out there? I've got the samsung 2ns chips. At the moment I don't have a clue what they mean and whether to increase/decrease the settings, and which ones are most useful.

Thanks

EDIT: just reduced CAS latency to 6 clocks as opposed to 7 clocks and it crashed :(

First of all decrease your mem clock to default. Then try these settings with ATITrayTool (not ATITool):

TRCDRD to 6
TRCDWR 6 to 3
TRP to 5
TRAS to 6
TRRD to 5
TR2W to CL+1
TWR to 5
TW2R to 1
TR2R to 2

After testing stability with these settings, find new max mem clock.

I tried what you said, but it crashed out each time. Also, i couldn't reduce the TR2W to CL+1, the minimum available was CL+1

These are the defaults for the settings above:

TRCDRD: 7
TRCDWR: 4
TRP: 5
TRAS: 14
TRRD: 5
TR2W: CL+3
TWR: 7
TW2R: 3
TR2R: 2

Where do you go to find the settings? do you just search for the serial number on the chip to get a datasheet or something? Anyways, i'm gonna play with these settings for a while, at least i've got a rough guide. Thanks :D

EDIT: DAMN... Just saw that you said to do this with ATITrayTools. What difference does this make? I can't use ATT, everytime i try to load it, my computer restarts :ohwell:
