Do they stay on, or only a few seconds when you boot up?

Does it still work though? Vista crashing is normal if you installed with 4 gb of RAM.

my computer wont boot anymore.

here is the real problem i think. when i plug the auxillary cable to the motherboard my computer wont even turn on but when i unplug the auxillary cable my computer starts but it does not boot up since no auxillary cable is connected and that is where i see the lights on the back of the video card showing up.

i think my pc is dead...

The red lights generally mean the card isn't getting enough power.

There are four LED's on the 4870/4850. I'm not sure what the order is per card but here are descriptions of each:

D1601 - Shows overheating

D1602 - Power connector #1 removed

D1603 - Power connector #2 removed

D1604 - GPU fail

The descriptions above are for a 4870. I'll have to check my 4850 when I get home to see if the numbering is the same and location.

Make sure you are using the right cable for the motherboard. Are both connectors plugged into the card? What power supply are you using? Give us your system specifications please.

HEC 550w Power supply

Thats your problem! Its not getting enough power because HEC is a case psu manufacturer and its complete garbage. Get a new psu asap before it kills something!

i just tried another power supply, a coolermaster 500w. when i plug the 24pin power cable to the motherboard but without the auxillary cable connected, my pc runs (fans etc....) but when i connect the auxillary power cable, it wont power on. same scenario when i use the HEC psu.

i think my motherboard is dead.

I think you may be right. You are using the mobo connector and not a pci-e power connector in the motherboard right? You also have standoffs under the motherboard for mounting?

Also, as crazy as it sounds, right before this happened did you increase your fan speeds by any chance?
