HD4850 atikmdag.sys stopped responding - BSOD

Anyone else having this issue? :rockout:

I started experiencing this when I started using HD 4850. It happened when I was using CAT 8.7 and now, CAT 8.8 as well...

Symptoms would be is that the screen starts to flicker, it will tend to load Vista Home Basic GUI, then gives the message on the lower right hand side corner that ATI Driver has stopped responding, then eventually, boom, BSOD!!! :confused:

check the temps on your card,it could be overheating.You can check them with gpu-z,it will continue to monitor them while you play a game.

well, so far it didn't happen when I'm gaming... only when idle... in 2D mode... when I'm just surfing the internet and listening to mp3's, stuff like that...

i checked temps, 67 to 72 (in 2D mode alright)

update: this is a screen shot, it had successfully recovered, though, most of the time it can't recover so it will go to a BSOD, :banghead:

used to get that allot with powerplay....try to OC the card 1MHz in CCC and see if making powerplay disfunctional cures the issue, temperary fix I know but it may get ya by!

Grab the 8.10 drivers, when I installed them, my 4870 started spinning the fan at 50% when CCC loaded in windows. If the overdrive tab works, there is a slider there with manual fan control. If temps are related that should help, even with that single slot cooler.

I hope 8.10 resolves this issue... I've "googled" this one and it seems related to Vista and DX10 Cards and when Aero is enabled... Found one suggestion at AMD Forums but it didn't work for me... :rockout:

Disable Aero. Fixed me 100%. That's why it doesn't happen while gaming, because Aero gets disabled.

I can't get Vista to come out of hibernation or suspention, I have tried the re post VGA on resume option as well as STR. Nothing works.

Well i have this same problem,

i had just purchased a couple 4850's after having 4870 on water cooling.. i thought id try the 4850's under water aswell, both cards worked perfectly in Xfire and singely on the std heatsinks, but as soon as i put one under water i started getting the atikmdag.sys BSOD, so after alot of fing around i plugged back in he fan 4pin header and didnt get the error anymore, so.. does 8.10 drivers cure this issue? i never had this problem running the 4870's with not fan speed input with 8.8 and 8.9 drivers.. y has it got a problem with the 4850's 8.8 and 8.9 drivers.

i hope this is fixed with 8.10? anyone else tryed ripping off the std heatsink and got this error? or anyone got any ideas for a fix?

oh well... i'm starting to get annoyed with this problem. CAT 8.10 didn't resolve the issue... disabling aero did not help either...

i'm just thinking of getting back to XP and making my DX10 card capability useless... :banghead:

I know how you feel, the longer I use Vista the more I hate it. I'm currently on 8.10 and now BSODs or driver resets so far, but I'm not holding my breath, the moment one appears I'm back to Vista Basic.

You have a similar issue with my friend. His doesn't get to BSOD (maybe not just yet), but his screen resolution reverts back to 800x600 and then turns back to Vista Basic. :shadedshu

hi, ive read all the post, Ive installed the tech power up GPU, my GPU temperature is 127+. What does that mean? And i have that display driver atikmdag has stopped responding and successfully recovered. I have the latest driver of ATI 8.10. I went into the Overdrive tab, And usually it would tell me the temperature but now it just stays at 0.. but the GPU reading is 127+, and I touched my fan and it was soo hot.., ive cleaned it, i just added new thermal paste on it..

here are my system specs.

System Name : Doan PC
Processor : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU
Graphic Card : Radeon xX1650 Series
2 Gig Ram of DDR2 i think.

I get the same problem apart from it only happens to me during gaming or 3DMark tests etc, the macking restarts due to display driver crash, GPU-z informs me that the core clock is 65537MHz and Overdrive 0MHz. I have the lastest catalyst.

If that temp is real it means that your GPU is being cooked to death. More than 90C is death waiting to happen and even 90C is too hot.

Can you touch the back of your card without burning the living hell out of yourself?

umm, for like 2 seconds then it hurts... ok, then how can i cool it?

and if this helps, the card/fan is hot but not my room.. and the pc been on all day.. it doesnt give off heat but its super hot still.. you think i should bring it into best buy or something? or should i ????

ok, i took out my card, i put some more thermal paste, i let it cool down first, then i put it on, let it dry, then put it back on and now the CAT is actually reading the temperature, but its still rising,its atm, 86c and rising.. wow.

are you sure it's 127+??? men that's too hot!!!

mine normally runs around 70 to 80 when in 2D mode... when in 3D, i think it reaches at around 90 or so...
