I know it's possible but I can't seem to find out exactly how to, or what you need to do.

I have a HD3870 sitting around and an engineer who runs solidworks that doesn't want to burn the money on a FireGL or Quadro.

I could also use a 4850 I have laying around but haven't heard any news of being able to softmod that card.

From what I hear Solidworks looks for the driver itself or it wont take advantage of your video card and relies totally on your processor so unless someone has other information that unfortunately isn't an option.

Ya, I'm going to try to run some benchmarks on the system with the 3870 and 4850 in it and compare it to a Fx1700 I have also, but I don't think its going to be pretty.

I know the 2600xt modded will beat the Fx1700.....

Ya from what I can see you don't change the device id and its actually a modification to the drivers for the FireGL to make them see the card as a FireGL.

Yes, I we know you "can" do it... And that information is all but useless unless you know how it's done which is the question.

Read the articles and you will find out *HOW* to do it. Off the top of my head if I remember correctly you have to change the ASIC number in the cards drivers and/or BIOS. The info. and directions are in the articles/links. Seems to be not that hard.

ati drivers.

Download the firegl drivers for the card that the 3870 is equal to. extract them by right clicking if you has winrar

read the links for the extra little tidbits, but thats the general idea:rockout:

I know it's possible but I can't seem to find out exactly how to, or what you need to do.

It's definitely possible, I have one running on my home machine right now. Also did one at work on a dual core Intel and didn't notice a lot of instability or errors over the FireGL V5600 and quad core Intel I was later upgraded to. Used it for a couple months in production, it's still around and operational as a test machine.

See the following:

http://tinyurl.com/75zgyp

The original page has died and this is a tinyURL link to the Google cache. It is essential that you obtain the firegl_8_44_xp32_056527_ml.exe driver. I've not had success with others.

Once you replace the device ID's in the CX_56527.inf file and create the patched ati2mtag.sy_ file, you can save those and the driver installer in a separate folder for future installs. That eliminates the RivaTuner step after the first attempt, all you do then is run the driver installer, cancel out, and replace the two files mentioned above with the ones you modded. Go to hardware manager, reinstall the driver and point to the proper directory, voila, Firestream 9170.

Works fine with dual LCDs, AutoCAD and SolidWorks. I used the Asus EAH3870 that came with Company of Heroes (newer version smaller card with gold heatsink) with XP SP2 or SP3 32-bit.
