New monitor time!

As I'm getting back into gaming along with other things, instead of branching out and upping to 4-6 monitors (Yes I'm insane), I'm thinking of buying one larger hi-res display to save workspace and provide me with higher resolution and support for higher definition TV.

I'm between an ASUS 19", a Viewsonic 22", and an ASUS 24"... However I've never messed with widescreen, I'm still using my barely-rectangular 17" format displays, and I'm not sure of the size of any of those in comparison to my old format 17s, or eachother. Can anyone post comparison pictures?

But got it considerably and suprisingly cheaper at Best Buy. It is a feaking awesome monitor, I love it.

Post your budget first.
It makes a difference.
Getting a 24" and above would mean 1080p (ie HD) and a good panel type.

VA Panel Technology
VA (Vertical Alignment) technology such as S-PVA/MVA are middle of the road LCD panels. They offer better color reproduction and wider viewing angles than TN panels, but have slower response times. They are very similar to S-IPS on paper. They also offer large viewing angles and good color reproduction, though not as good as S-IPS. The response times are generally worse than TN or S-IPS panels and there have been reports of a few panels that suffer from input lag, so VA technology may not be the best choice for fast paced gaming. VA panels have the advantage of higher contrast ratios compared to other panel types, which leads to better black levels. The biggest disadvantage of VA based panels is color shifting. Color shifting is when the image viewed from one angle changes or "shifts" when viewed from a slightly different angle, making various uneven brightness levels across the display. This bothers many users to the point they will not even consider buying a VA based panel, while other users don't notice/aren't bothered by the color shifting. Color shifts also cause a loss of shadow detail in dark scenes when viewed directly from the center. VA panels are much easier to find compared to IPS because so many manufacturers use them. They offer better image quality than TN at lower price than IPS based panels.

TN Panel Technology
TN (Twisted Nematic) panels are the most widely used panel type as they are cheap and offer excellent response times, making them perfect for fast paced gaming. The response times of current TN panels range from 2ms to 5ms. However, color reproduction, viewing angles and contrast ratios of TN panels are the worst of any LCD panel technology. Unlike most 8-bit S-IPS/S-PVA/MVA panels, TN panels are only 6-bit and unable to display the full 16.7 million colors available in 24-bit true color. They can mimick the 16.7 million colors of 8-bit panels using a technique called dithering, but the results are unimpressive. TN panels have become popular with the average user because they are very inexpensive. They are also the only panels currently being used in 22" widescreen monitors, a very popular size. Many of these 22" TN panels are around the same price or cheaper than other 20" monitors with different panel types, so it is easy to see how how they gained popularity. Afterall, the average user buys a monitor based on price and size.

Update: Other panel types are now starting to be used in 22" displays, though the majority are still TN.

Summary of LCD Panel Technology
S-IPS/H-IPS panels are generally considered the best all around panel type, but they are more expensive and very few are made. High end, expensive.
S-PVA/MVA panels offer better color reproduction and viewing angles than TN panels, have slightly worse response times than TN or S-IPS, offer the best contrast ratios, may suffer from color shifting or input lag and have higher availability than S-IPS panels. Mid range, fair price.
TN panels are very cheap and have the fastest response times, but suffer from inferior color reproduction, contrast ratios and viewing angles. Low end, inexpensive.

Few displays lower than 24" have the superior panel and viewing angle type.
It's likely that if it's within budget, the 24" monitor would be the best one.
Post the specs for the 24" monitor so that the guys who really know this type of stuff (ie not me!!) can give you good advice.

My budget is pretty unlimited, as I work my own hours pretty much at a decent pay rate, as well as get a 1000$ a month allowance from school. I can afford something nice. I'm talking physical size though. How big is the screen of a 24 compared to a 22? Can anyone post like... a literal visual comparison?

dude 24 is friggin sweat man. At a place I use to work at one guy got a 24 inch and man the real estate on that thing is sick. Trust me if you got cash get a 24 or a 25.5 heck matter of fact newegg sells the hanns g 28 inch for 350 bucks. granted contrast is a little on the sloppy side and res maxes at 1900x1200 but 28 inches man that has sounds cool.

but 24 is the most reasonable move.

and after that it just comes down to specs and manufacturer,

LG, viewsonic, samsung, dell, etc, etc.

I mean I have a 1080p 22 inch but I'm sure if I upgraded to a 24 inch or 25.5 inch I would still go wow. even more wow if I had that 28 inch from hanns g.

If you're only worrying about size and no problem about budget then get the 24" version.

The reason I'm saying so is that there is a big jump in quality from 22" to 24".

That would be in type of panel and in the viewing angle.
A good 22" would be great but if you compare to others you might see a red monitor veering into blue or purple at certain angles.

I don't really have much experience in monitors, but I did research before I bought my LG 22".
I purchased the 22" because the prices for the 24" were awesomely out of budget for me at the time even though the picture quality had a thousand reasons to be much better ( ie VA panel not TN panel) but for a meagre 2" it'd cost me like €140 more which for me wasn't feasible at the time.

Another thing to take into account is the resolution.
My laptop's got a 17" screen at 1920x1200.
My LG got a 22" screen at 1680x1050.
There's no need to say which gives the best picture.... I just wish my lappie's screen was larger! Or that I had chosen the more expensive option when I bought my desktop monitor...

My conclusion: if budget is not a problem don't go for anything less than 24" PVA panel.

because I don't want a TV because I haven't watched TV in about 3 years...

anyways it's not like its a total turnoff at 1900x1080p. Besides 24's out the door costs 300 bucks which is something a lot of people don't have.

Is this one any good? I like the features, it's got a slightly smaller screen with 1080p for an awesome price, 2ms response time. I don't know anything about contrast ratios or how to determine image quality though, so I come to you!

yea I looked at that yesterday, thats a good monitor, unless you can find the dell 23 inch for cheaper, or the samsung one.

or unless you plan on grabbing a 24inch.
