well im having the issues with my Palit HD4870 1GB sonic dual edition with black squares flickering over the screen, the ATI display drivers crashing to black screen and and crashing to blue screen and crashing windows to reboot :banghead:

contact palit and there telling me to slow the latency of my ram from 4.4.4.15 tp 5.5.5.15 can any one tell me the link here

Are you overclocking?
If you are, have you ran stability tests? (prime95 etc)
What are the temperatures on your card?

This is only a test. The memory module you are using does not follow JEDEC specification (JEDEC is a worldwide association that defines memory specification). This kind of memory IC usually is sorting by lot so that they need a higher voltage to run a very quick latency. On the other hand, Vista is a highly memory sensitive operation system. If the symptom improves while you set a slower latency. It means the root cause shall be memory module and we can try to add 0.1V more on the memory module to see if it can stable run at a quicker latency

but its still doing it

If you have OCZ Platinum 4Gb (2X2) Dual channel, then it should be CL 5-4-4-15 @ 2.1V

OCZ Platinum quad kit is CL 4-5-4-18 @2.1V

OCZ Platinum single channel (4X1) is CL 4-5-4-15 @2.1V

Go to OCZ website to make sure you have the proper timings. They can vary a lot and cause issues.

Im running at 4.5.4.15 @ 2.14v cant get 2.1v in bios they asked me to run it at 5.5.5.15 but it made now differance

Does the flickering happens on desktop? or just in games? it could be a faulty card u got. Try lowering the clockspeed of your card

it seems to be just in game and yes going back to 750/900 does seem to cure it but as its a O/C'd card from the factory then i shouldnt have to but it doesnt cure the ati display drivers from crashing which i think is a different issue , I wish i just stck to invidea now all my other cards i have had have been invidea and never any hassle :banghead:

Now don't go blaiming Ati, it could be that you need to clean the nvidia driver residues or a faulty card.

I have owned mostly nvidia but my current card is a Sapphire 4870 and I love it, great performance and no problems.

ran driver cleaner in safe mode theres no sign of invidia drivers left , sent a GPU-Z log to AMD and there as confused as me , :wtf:

I have noticed a steady decline in how well ATI products worked after the 8.8 drivers were released. And now having to release a hotfix for allowing 2 4850s to work in crossfire, that is just unacceptable. Personally it is why I am switching to NVidia.

Make sure you un-install all Nvidia programs not just drivers...

I'm jumping from ATI to ATI card so I shouldn't have many probs with program clashes...

Are you sure for the dual channel??? the 2x2gb kit???
because I see that as 5-5-5-18 2.1v

just want to double check.

Have you tried a fresh install?
If you have a spare HDD, try a fresh install.

I used the correct methods of removing all reminants of nVdia drivers and I still had issues with my OS after going from 8800GT to HD4850.

I'm sorry for the kick. But has this issue been resolved? I'm having the exact same problems with BOTH of my Palit Dual Sonic HD4870's.

I get the same artifacts you describe, black specs all over the screen and sometimes some strange colours, obviously ram artifacts. I have these problems with the Turbo bios setting , so the card runs 775/1000Mhz.
It's purely the GDDR5 chips, because when I back down to 925Mhz the artifacts disappear. (the cores rock though, 840 and 860 with stock voltage)

The card is still away being checked out, they have done some quick checks and it checked out ok but there now doing some different checks and I am waiting to here back this is a email i recieved from palit if its any help

One thing we can suggest is that not plugging ATI VGA card on NVIDIA chipsets based motherboard (either way same). Although they should be compatible, in some cases, both parties' driver update will impact each other side. A Intel P45 based motherboard might be an optional upgrade suggestion

I'm running with an Intel DFI DK P45 T2RS Plus board, so my problem for one has nothing to do with the chipset. I suspect it has something to do with the GDDR5 chips themselves or the power/current to them.
With only one card, I could believe it's the card itself acting up, but I have the problem with both my Palit. So I'm guessing it's something else... but what?

I'm going to test my Palit this evening in a friend's rig.
He has a Cooler Master RealPower 850W PSU , where as I have connected my card to a dedicated VGA PSU, namely the Thermaltake ToughPower 450W. Together with my OCZ Gamestream 520W I have a total of 970W. This should be enough but I want to rule out the PSU combo.

Ahhh the same story "again and again" with NVIDIA chipsets based motherboard

Yes thats true ... Even ABIT have admit that issues , and even Creative XFi cards ,
got lots of blame , with out to be their fault.
NVIDIA had do violation at PCI specs "timings" .
Causing incompatibility to many add on cards .

About lowering system memory timings , the advice was not bad.
Latest games at high resolution, cause large amount of data movement,
motherboard + chip set + ram + hard drivers , require a stable environment ,
so to move that amount of data safely.

I am a fan of ATI and i have purchased 3 4870's and 2 of them had issues. There are lots of reports around the net like the Asus 4870's fans are dying for no reason. Alot of people are complaining about artifacts and other issues. Sapphire had to release a bios update within days because they had problems.

So ye theres definately some dodgy 4870's around but if you get a good one the image quality craps on Nvidia(IMO).

ATI definately needs to lift their game. Most reviewers are still butt kissing ATI's 4 series but if these problems continue they gonna lose customers.

I've seen a decline in quality in PC parts in general, it used to be rare to get a dodgy videocard or motherboard.

To the OP i would push them hard, if you pay for an overclocked card it should work without being downclocked.

Its good to get the card back to them within 7 days if there are issues as most places will replace it. Any more time and you need to RMA, and you could be without your new toy for 2 months.

Well I've just tested one of my two Palit Dual Sonic 1GB Hd4870's in a friend rig - who also has an P45 board but with a different PSU - and still the card will not run artifact free on stock GDDR5 speeds (eg. 4000MHz).
So I know now that it's not a problem with my rig, but with the card itself.
I'm going to test the other one too. Is it just bad luck that both my cards have trouble running stock GDDR5 speeds, or something else?
Could it be a flaw in production batch?

Any memory , even GDDR needs other than the chip , high quality PCB , and a proper designed PCB , so the signal lines to be clear from interference .

The theory of adding voltage to memory, so to remain stable , has nothing to do with stock operation.

So if they are flaws , this is the possible list .

OCZ become famous , by using high quality PCB !!

The Palit non-reference OC'ed HD4870s and reference HD4870s both use the same GDDR5 chips.

The only difference is that Palit has (supposedly) binned their chips and tested/rated them to run at 1000MHz stock, rather than the usual 900MHz.

If your Palit HD4870 isn't running properly then the card is faulty and wasn't properly ensured to run at it's stock overclocked settings. Just RMA it, or return it. Plain and simple.

If all else fails just find an HD4870 from a different company. I'd suggest non-OC'ed, as you should have less troubles that way. Do the overclocking yourself, and save the money you'd spend extra on an OC'ed model...
