4850+vf900?

Hi!

Just bought a visiontek 4850 from Fitseries3, and it's coming this way (thanks Fit

).

Anywhoo, iv'e read that the stock reference cooler it's crap, and i have a zalman vf-900 unused, anybody had luck installing this cooler on the reference 4850?

If so, can you tell me the temps you achieve with this cooler?

Or should i buy a newer cooler?

i dont think you will have any temp issues on the core. but the small ram sinks are not enough for the vrm to cool properly. you may need to add active cooling above the vrm area.

i've not dealt with any 4850's, but this is what i had to do to my 4870 to keep it from crashing when the vrm's overheated.

My Toxic 4850 comes standard with the VF900.

Temps never really go above 62 deg c or so.

Dont forget to not only heatsink the mem chips, but the vrm's etc.

Basically the stuff under the exposed copper heatsink on the standard cooling.
Actually, quite a few guys simply cut off that copper heatsink and leave it on. Should work quite well.

before i make any recomendations on what to buy. i think we should let a few people who own a 4850 chime in. i know the 4850 has a little different board layout than the 4870, even tho it is the same gpu. it may or may not need such a large sink on the vrms.

for the ram itself, those you linked to would be fine as long as they get a little airmovement across them.

Well, heres what mine looks like...

The main things to worry about are..
GPU
VRM
Mem

The stock TIM on the HD4850 sucks... shaved 6C Idle and 10C Load off my temps just by switching to Arctic Silver Ceramique... So thats the #1 thing.
(At 48% fan speed under load I reach 58-62C (Room Temp of about 70F).
So the cooler itself doesn't suck its just ill-fated because of the TIM.

Cover everything (including the grey blocks). (The one on the outside of the HSF coverage area is optional, (I believe it belongs to the VMem regulation) so it might allow a better OC if you slap a small HS on it.. other than that you are spot on.
About AS5, I really wouldn't use that stuff unless you intend on doing a bench run. Its conductive and begins to degrade after 5-6 months of use(about 500-600hrs of usage while the PC is on), its still good in the long run, but can't keep up with Arctic Silver Ceramique after about a year. .

Well, if you don't mind attacking your old cooler, some guys just saw off the tail bit of the heatsink and use that. The copper bit that is just next to the fan.

This is with an Asus 4850 and Accelero S1 rev 2 cooler with 140mm fan (cooler type not too relevant as it's the RAM/vrm temps we're interested in).

Sounds to me like the 4870 IS different to the 4850 in terms of vrm cooling. It clearly needs more.

Edit: this is with those small blue Zalman ramsinks on RAM and vrms.

Hhmm... your idea sounds interesting, i bet that chunk of copper from the stock cooler it's better than those aluminum sinks.

Task Done!

Ok, so i have fitted my 4850 with the zalman vf-900, and also sawed off the end of the stock cooler, wich btw, it's aluminum painted in copper, not pure copper as the reviews said.:shadedshu

Anywhoo, great improvement over the stock, wich was heating the gpu up to 95c :eek:

, now with the vf-900, iv'e never seen temperatures over 62c with heavy gaming!
