Phenom II isnt even AM3?

Im right in thinking that Phenom 2 jst is only for AM2+ boards right now?

If so then i think we will see a lot more from the AM3 versions, even more oc ability and less wattage and thus less heat.

Even then by that time DDR3 will possibly be cheaper and motherboards will be better.

DDR3 will increase the performance too.

People wonder why phenom is only on par with high end Core 2 but then again i7 isnt that much better is it? its not like its twice as powerful as core 2.

In one or two commonly reviewed games, i7 performance is exceptional. In others, it's just a few frames more..

The processors are AM2, AM2+, and AM3 compatible. Meaning you can buy a Phenom II and stick it in any of those(assuming the board's chipset and BIOS supports the processor).

We haven't seen any AM3 tests yet, because there aren't any AM3 boards available yet.

IMO, the AM3 performance will not be all that much better than the AM2+ performance. DDR3 isn't going to add a lot to the Phenom II's performance. The memory bandwidth isn't the limitting factor in performance right now.

do Phenom 2s have memory controllers for both ddr 2 and 3 then?

i dunno im not convinced about the new generation of cpus, i mean i7 seems like it will mature well after a few revisions but the amd as much as i love them i was told it was on par with some of the later core 2 quads

Those later Core 2 Quads were over $1000 3 months ago, those same Quads are on the coat tails of the i7 920. So not something really to worry about.

The Phenom II X4 940 is not an AM3 processor. It doesn't support AM3 socket. It's just a AM2+ variant of Deneb. The Phenom II X4 945, which will replace the 940 in ~March is the AM3 part that supports DDR3 memory and DDR2. Let this slide somewhat explain the compatibility gimmick:

940/920 won't do DDR3, but 945/925 will do both DDR2 and DDR3.

Switching sockets is a big deal, cant use your current setup with it. Thats the point of the 940, so people just buy a processor and toss it in. If that doesn't make you happy wait for the 945. I don't think the gains from DDR3 are going to be that amazing, so really all up to you.

Supposedly though since the AM3's will have a DDR2 controller you can use a AM3 proc on a AM2+ board as long as the board supports it but you will not be able to use a AM2/AM2+ proc on a AM3 board since the proc will lack the DDR3 controller. Hopefully when AM3 proc's and boards are released it will drive DDR3 prices down, probably not as low as DDR2 has become but reasonable.

Exactly, though I doubt the DDR3 prices will drop to where DDR2 is... there is just no way.

If DDR3 prices drop far enough, DDR2 prices will start to climb back up.

Check some prices on DDR or SD-RAM. Things get expensive as they become obsolete. Both the major chip makers are moving over their mainstream stuff to DDR3. I'd say by mid-2011 you'll see parity between DDR2 and DDR3, after that DDR2 will start climbing higher as less people use it, and less manufacturers continue to build with it.

Would it be possible to slip a Phenom II into my mobo? It's just AM but does do Phenom I with bios update. I think the HT will be limited to 2000 would that be a bottleneck for it?

DDR was always expensive though. I had Geil 2x512mb 2-2-5-2 sticks and I had picked them up for like $130. DDR2 rolled onto the scene at really low prices, so yeah I just cant see DD3 dropping that low.

Lol. For $130 u can buy a cheap p33/p35 mobo / cheapy Celeron / and 2x2gb DDR2 800 MHZ ram
