Any chance of a Video Gallery? For setups/cribs/mods etc?

Following how well this thread seems to be doing, and people also doing their own videos of their setups. I had the idea, of the possibility of having a Video Gallery. Like we have for the Case Gallery. But it is to be used for showing off your case/mods setup, gaming rooms, project logs (maybe).

Now I'm not sure on the capacities of TPU's servers but if it would be too much to ask, I have seen many sites have youtube videos embedded into the site, so maybe as part of adding your vid to the gallery you link to a youtube site, and the html does its magic

and pulls the video from there.

Just an idea at this stage, but I think it could be really good, IMO sometimes a photo just doesnt cut it. LMK what you all think!

Why? people have liked the idea in the thread I linked to.

Just thinking cus W1zz has got videos going on TPU, I thought some users Videos would be really good too. Some of the stuff CyberDruid has on youtube is really good. And MKmods could sho some of his stuff easier in a video IMO.

Why not? Having a thread specifically for everyone's videos in General Nonsense would be the perfect way to see if devoting an entire forum to the topic would be needed. As far as setting aside server space for videos, that call is made by one person alone.

We could do it by youtube videos / video uploads to say rapidshare, however having the videos actually on TPU would be awesome.

If this was to get the go ahead, Ill borrow a decent camera and do a proper video once my CM 690 is in.

True, might only be me, but cus it nevers turns up in the latest post section, I rarely go in the General Nonsense. Plus it tends to get a bit messy in one post. Thought it might be possible on a trial run or something. If it doesnt work then it could be taken down.

But I appreciate the input. Setting up a GN thread is still a start. I have ideas but dont always know the best way to implement them, lol.

You could do it in general nonsense. And pick the best ones, like modding, overclocking, reviews and so on. Put them in a different thread so you know only the good ones will make it there.

It would be really cool to see user reviews and stuff.

I'm gonna have a go at doing a GN thread tomorrow, its 11pm here and I got up early this morning. Will see how I go, but will try to have my first post as a bit of an index, so people can post, then I put it in a section with a link to the video. That way you dont have to trawl through pages (if it takes off) to look at stuff.
Need some ideas on restrictions tho. There is the obvious bad content which will be reported, but stuff like what formats and what servers. As well as input on the idea, can people let me know on some of this (and anything else you think of)

Servers/Sites: Youtube, Filefront...
Format: mov, avi, wmv...

(im tired so cant think of anymore, lol) But I think not having stuff like rapidshare/megaupload is a good idea.

LMK, I'm gonna try and make this work, then if it goes well, maybe w1zz could make it a permanent feature!

Does it take server space to embed videos from say, youtube? I dunno if this is feasible with our current setup tho; just looking for alternatives to TPU hosting videos and pwning servers.

I noticed there is an embed link on youtube pages, so I was thinking if this does become official, maybe you would paste that on the submission page so that its not TPU servers taking the load. Gonna start work on the GN thread now, will post back when its done

Let me know what you think, but in that thread, need ideas, on if rules are okay, and need more safe video hosting sites. Ones that dont spam your screen with ads would be good.

Use project-log / general hardware / general nonsense threads appropriately and on topic/context to post Youtube links to your videos. Playing a video host is a very large venture. You can't embed Youtube videos as HTML is disabled on most of the general forums, for security reasons. The YouTube BBcode can be worked out but even then a thread with say 5 embedded videos per page, would jack up data for users to download by hundreds of kilobytes, which would rather be saved with merely posting the URL to it on YouTube.

The idea wasnt to use up TPU's resources. My idea was for it to be like the Case Mod Gallery, not a forum. On the front page, if you go to case mod gallery, I thought it could be something like that, with a dedicated forum just for discussing.
Then when you click on the submit new video, you paste the embedded url link into the form while you are filling everything else in. That way all TPU will be doing is providing the interface and organisation of the videos.

Even then, having the front-page parse embedded code becomes a privacy issue (the same needn't apply with user forums). You have part of the page that's in adherence to our privacy policy, and part of it (the embedded video) that adheres to YouTube's rather intrusive privacy policy. It's a touchy issue. Setting something of that sort will require some thought. The idea itself isn't bad though.

Glad you think the idea isnt bad. Obviously dont know a lot about site running, and html, but I think if it could be implemented.

Obviously the securist option is for TPU to host the videos, but I appreciate that consumes massive server resources, so the embeded youtube thing was an idea I had to get round that.
