CoD4 problem

For the last little while I have been unable to game CoD4 online (sp works fine) because when I go to join a server CoD crashes and I get a iw3mp.exe error. I have read that this may be cause by my realtek onboard sound, but I have tried everything, reinstalling CoD and updating every conceivable driver. fyi I use a usb headset, so I don't even use the onboard sound when gaming. Anyway it's driving me nuts and I could use some help. Thx in advance.

Could this be another mic issue?
Do have have a mic? Have you recently unplugged it?

I have a mic on my usb headset, the mic port on the mobo is being used by the speakers which have a mic port on them ( I have tried playing CoD with it used by a mic, no good). There are also mic and headphone ports on the top/front of my case, I went into Realtek and selected the option to not use these ports as I read that this may fix the issue, however this is not the case. This is a real pain in the ass. I don't think that I need to get another copy, the game worked fine for quite some time then somewhere along the line (maybe after a CoD patch) the issue arose. I have fully deleted and reinstalled CoD at least 4 times over the last 6 months with no improvements. Sry for such a long post but I am very frustrated as this has been going on for a few months.

I think I am going insane because of this continuing problem, I really need some help here. I am getting ready to throw my speakers through my monitor in a frustrated rage.

Ok you have to turn the audio ports on the front of your computer off.

Try to enable recording and playback devices if using vista. It worked for me.

It seems dumb but try plugging a mic into the front port. Some people found this to allow it to run again. Also do you have it installed on a second drive or partition? That can cause the same error.

I also found this online...

"The file "mssmp3.asi" rename to "mssmp3.bak" Just be sure to make a backup of the original.

And.....

"Start, control panel
-Hardware and Sound
-Sound
-Recording Tab
-Right Click in window, chose "Show Disabled Devices"
-"Setero MIX"appeared, Right Click and choose enable
-OK"

Just a thought, but COD4 MP needs punkbuster if I am not wrong (been a while since I played COD4)? Have you updated PB to the latest version?

I had some problems with PB and COD4 MP last year after a patch, and updating PB helped fix it.

mailman, I have tried plugging things into all of the audio ports (headphone and mic ones) and I have enabled/disabled the stereo mix and I have tried the renaming of the file, all without success. I am beginning to think that I may have used a patch with a corrupt file or something, because I got a different error a couple of times that involved the iw_13.1wd file. I got all the patches again, brand new, and will try another fresh install sometime soon, wish me luck. keep sending possible fixes my way if you can. btw, punk buster is fully updated, so that is not the source of my problems.

I have that problem some time it could be that there a firewall and some one in the game u cant really connect with u need your nat to be set to open.

Damn I thought you already did a reinstall. Do me a favor. When you reinstall dont patch it right away. Play the game for a while and see if you get an error. If not then download the patch from somewhere else and make sure you patch it in the proper order.

I use www.Fileshack.com a lot. Iv never got a corrupt patch from them.

ok spent a few hours working at this yesterday night and today. I did another reinstall and then defragged, then I installed each patch one at a time, testing cod each time and doing a reboot after each, all was going well untill i installed 1.7, then it crashed at the same point as b4. Tried some more stuff, did some reboots. No good. So this morning I started again and am currently at 1.6 and will do a system restore point, then install 1.7 and pray that it works. If not then I am F'd in the A on this one.

Finally! I think i have got it working! I had to go and delete some files that weren't being uninstalled that were hidden in users/appdata/local/virtualstore/programfiles/activision/CoD4:MW. Seems to be working, I even saved my old profiles in mydocs so I still have em and put em back in after the fresh install. Victory at last, hope it keeps working.

Iv never heard of the problem before but thank you for the update! Do you happen to know exactly what files you deleted?

ok well it was w/e is at appdata/local/virtualstore/program files/activision/call of duty 4 modern warfare. I just checked it now and it has two folders: pb (presumably punk buster related files) and players (which contains the profiles). B4 I deleted I saved the profiles, hoping that it wasn't them which cause the issue. I tried cod out after the reinstall and the updates without putting the old profiles back and it worked so I decided to put the old profiles back and it is still working so that is fantastic.

Its odd an uninstall didnt dump these files. I guess if it happens again youll know what to look for. My next suggestion would have been to reinstall your OS.
