XFX ATi Cards

I've seen that they have a lot of problems. I was looking at the XFX HD 4870 1gb on newegg but I'm not sure if they're reliable or not. I read they have flickering issues and stuff.

is reference so i dont know why they have problems. for me xfx is a good brand, at least their nvidia cards as is the only good brand that u find here

Meh, I wouldn't really trust the reviews on newegg. I would check respected review sites instead of trusting the reviews from the common user.

I've seen a few forum posts with users having flickering and freezing issues. I guess they have an updated bios out for it tho.

could be the clocks they are ran at, course this is XFX first forray into Red Territory so they should get better by the next release, at least they are the other company that has a Lifetime warranty.

My XFX 4830 kills, its the best card I've ever owned. Seriously though no problems at all.

I folded with it last night and never saw a temp over 55C. Love my cooler and the Black PCB!

The problems are minor. Just simple errors in setting clocks the BIOS. You can modify the BIOS and edit it with the correct settings and reflash the card, should you come across flickering/flashing problems with an XFX HD4870.

XFX's HD4870s are just the original reference 3-phase PCB designs with the reference cooler. Nothing special. You're paying a whole lot extra just for the XFX name and the warranty. If you don't need the warranty, I'd suggest going with a cheaper HD4870...

It's the cheapest 1gb on newegg right now. I know there's a price cut coming so I will wait for that. I will most likely grab HIS tho.

Yes, I see that the price premium for the XFX has gone down quite a bit, since the time it was released.

PCB color is telling. That means it's non reference, but if you're talking about reference DESIGN then yes. It is the same card. Their 4850 is a non-reference design.

XFX has their own people to manufacture cards and ATi did not make the cards for them.

The flickering is caused by PowerPlay and the later drivers. It has been seen on other manufacturer's 4870s on the AMD forums as well. We issued a BIOS update that resolves the flickering.

Just in case anyone needs them and they come across this thread I am attaching the updates. 487AYDD2 is the 4870 512MB XXX and 487AZDD2 is the 4870 1GB XXX.

I'm sure I read that they were reference layout, but the power systems were "upgraded" above reference design.

i have an XFX HD4870x2, had it for a week, it's awesome, out of the box clocks at 837mhz with no mods, fans a bit noisy when you ramp up the 3D but thats to be expected of a x2 stock cooler.

In the BIOS I have even got 2 voltage options higher than stock to choose from! Stock for this card is 1.250v, I can pick 1.3 or 1.35v for the card, havent yet, am waiting for the AC x2 Extreme before I up the voltage..... cant say fairer than that.

so you quit on the plait cards? Because i noticed something odd unless if its the clock rates for the cards, CPU mag did a review of multiple cards and the HIS beat the Palit cards.

No not quit, I only ever buy XFX or Palit now (or Gainward as a subsidery of palit) Which cards are you talking about in particular... the x2?

i notice the Sig has the 4870, so that means you gave up on the 4850s you had, unless if you have Multiple Machines, TBH im still unsure about all the card companies, so far it seems that Sapphire and palit make non ref boards, I would assume HIS aswell where everyone else doesnt, altho that doesn't mean those boards are any inferior.

I hope sometime Later this year to actually build a Monster Rig (full tower EATX capable Case, True AMD DDR3 Motherboard (Supports 1333 and higher, same with CPU Unlocked Multi, 8 gigs DDR3- Radeon 4800 series graphics, eventually a large monitor 22" )

I've heard a lot of good about them. I had a few set back but I still plan to have two xfx 4850's in crossfire by summer. Plus there is some rediculous reviews on newegg. I just blow em off and google search the product and read real reviews about said product.
