I was thinking about 8 months back that I would put together an all AMD rig...And I was hopeful when I heard the phenom 2 news. But, it seems my patience has run a little thin. So I've decided to go with the i7 platform instead. I already have the case, the video cards, etc. I was thinking of this combo.

It will be liquid cooled in a Lian Li A77b, with sli'd GTX285's.
If AMD had motherboards like this in their lineup I might not go the Intel route, but intel it seems has all the prime stuff these days. And this mobo looks and sounds spectacular.
Tell me what you think.

I think its gonna be a great rig. The bloodrage is such a evil looking board I love it!! I think once its all said and done you should have a AEON song play as your start up. Make that bitch as metal as possible

I wasn't even waiting for AMD to get in gear. I was going to buy another AMD combo as I've done since I dumped Celeron 366@550 for Athlon 900. But then I started reading the reviews. Oh, a Core 2 that blasts a Phenom can be had for cheap? I'll take it.

so what's wrong with the motherboard that are out for AMD now? The 790gx motherboards are awesome performers from everything I've read about them.

actually, the 9450=PII and the 9450 is no longer for sale(new that is)

Exactly. And the 790FX or GX boards with the SB750 are excellent. If you go with the good brands people have been raving about them.

Well, the ONLY decent mobo for the AMD platform in my opinion, is the ASUS M4A79T 790FX. In doing the math, by the time I get finished buying 3 waterblocks and a sound card (I hate the factory heat-pipe configurations that don't really do the job of cooling anything, and I'm not verey pleased with onboard sound) I'd have spent another 200-350 bucks. It's actually cheaper to go with the Intel...Everything I have in the links above PLUS the cpu block, the tubing, the 3 fan radiator, 4 fans, fan controller, the 1000 watt PSU, and various odds and ends comes to a little less than 1500 bucks...about $150-275 less expensive than the same AMD rig.

I would not call me a "fan" exactly. It is that with this particular selection I am not bound by chipsets. I can go either X fire or sli. And since I have it in my head that 2 video cards are better than one, I like that feature, ALOT.

Same story with me. Waiting for AMD's phenom and by the time it came out I was cheaper getting a q6600 which was faster and oc'd like a monster.

I guess nVidia should get their act in gear as well. Their mobos don't support crossfire, and their CPUs can't compete with Intel OR AMD.

In an effort to find some sort of constructiveness in your post, what would you have AMD do? They're well behind Intel in the market, and have been for a while. This is nothing new. Instead they made a platform tying together their CPU, GPU, and chipset. They're very competitive in price: performance, but are absent on the top end. When they release product, it's well within the margins of a competing Intel product. It's not like they're trying to sell you a PII for the same price as a Q9450, and saying the PII performs better. Reviews typically see a comparison between the two as a wash, so pick your favorite color. If you want crazy high-end stuff, Intel offers that. However, they're opening a new surgery center and accepting your arms and legs as payment.

Also, ya can't blame AMD for their board partners lacking on the sweet looking boards. Black and red is totally sexy, and I'm disappointed that AMD partners haven't done it yet. The closest ya get is a Sapphire PURE, but those are ugly as sin, imo. However, AMD doesn't fab the boards (or anything anymore), just the chips and designs.

I'm not crapping on AMD...I had as I had stated earlier planned on an AMD build. But their mobo's don't seem to have the features or layouts that I prefer, at least not yet. I like AMD. I still have a 939 socket 4200X2 that is still going strong. I'm rather fond of it. No complaints at all. However, I've been waiting for over a year to build a new PC, putting it off since the first "phenom" came out. AM3 is finally here BUT since I don't want to wait an additional 2 or 4 or six months for new mobo designs, I'll be going with Intel again. I was just asking you knowlegable fellows' opinion on the CPU, ram and mobo I chose. zthe rest was just idle chit-chat.

$310 for a mobo but you're going with "only" 3x1GB of ram? I think you should wait on prices or something and try to get a 3x2GB kit, depending on stock ram clocks and what OC you want/need.

Just curious here. After all, I'm running a 4GB C2D rig, but I'd say 3GB is plenty. :toast:

Indeed, you will cry in some games in Vista with only 3gb of ram..

PS- Phenom 2 isn't a bad chip by all means, it's still not "quite" up to par but the cost also isn't there at least.

The phenom II is a great chip, so is the I7. I've always been with AMD and I will continue until the day they go out of business. Nothing but good experiences with them.
