Yesterday i got this cooler, wich is the same as on Sapphire toxic.

The stock cooler from sapphire (Dualslot core=coper, fins=allu.)did the job quite well in atitool i got max 70c and in furmark i got 80c max. Now with the vf900 i got in atitool 60c max 30min. of testing but in furmark the temp. got to 116c before i stoped it, coz it seemd it will go higher.

I turned off the comp. to tuch the cooler, the first 30sec. it was cool but only then after the 30sec. it got hoter coz the fan wasnt spining. So the cooler must be working as it is geting hot.

Termal paste that i used was MX-2. Is it posible that i tightend it too much. Air flow in my case is good.

What shood i do coz as seed before when the comp. is on and i am stres testing it the cooler remains cool, it only gets hot when i turn of the comp.

I need some advice.
Should i take it back to the shop?

If i wont get it to work today when i come home from work i am selling it for 20eur shiped to EU countries (its only 1 day old).

Pictures would help - of the card you have and of the cooler.

Its hard to tell if you just put it on wrong, or if theres some kind of incompatibility.

Stock card looks like this:

The Zalman fited perfectly...And the Ram sinks(blue) fited too. Will poste pictures in the afternoon when i get home. The chip left a mark on the cooler in the midle ot the...(dont know the english word) :D

Has the coller a break in period to cool coz the termal paste should work from the start.

Exactly which temps are you looking at?

Is it the gpu, vram, or voltage reg temps?

Having run a Vf-900 on my 4850 Toxic, I never saw temps above 62 deg. C while running furmark.

I am looking at GPU temp., I am monitoring it with GPU-Z, HWMonitor, RivaTuner... They are all identical. Furmark has that graph when you do stabilety testing...And they all reported 116c on the gpu. Mem was 95c

How are you running the fan control? Plugged on the card, or off the psu?

The cooler came with fanmate2 and has a 3pin. conector so i had to put it in my motherbord. Trayed direct so 100% fan speed and with fanmate2 at 100%. I looked into BIOS of my motherboard if i had the fan control enabled for the fans but it was disabled, so full speed. It is wery windy :D around the cooler. But its cool to tuch even at 100c but when i turn off the comp. and the fan stops then the cooler gets hot.

i wonder if you did something wrong with the thermal paste.

The fact that heat *does* transfer when the fan is off, means that its cooling to some extent - heat is transferring from the GPU to the heatsink. Its just transferring too slowly which means it has bad contact.

Did you replace the thermal grease, and if so, what with and with how much?

yes, i reaplayed termal p. 3 times...wiped it of 3 times...Then finaly i took the vf900 of and reaplayed the stock cooler wich is working as sed before. I do heve some experiance about TIM coz i did reaplay it on all my other cards (3870,7600,9800...), wich worked great.
Will try it again when i get home and take some pictures too so you can see that the chip and the cooler did make good contact

P.s. i did read a review on Newegg....somebody seed thad dont tighten the cooler too much to the card. Isnt it best to be as tight as posible?

in theory you want it tight, but at the same time if you dont tighten every side equally, the cooler could cause a gap on one side of the heatsink.

diagonal, could be the word you're looking for. You tighten then in a patter like top left, lower right. top right, lower left.

MX2 is a good paste, thats not the problem.

The thing is, if the GPU is at 100C, the heatsink should be hot too - the fact the heatsink isnt at 100C as well, indicates that heat isnt transferring across fast enough. Perhaps you're using too much paste, too little paste, or you simply put it on wrong.

diagonal it is!!! :D

I aplay lets say an half of a rice of TIM on the chip. Have to say that the TIM has spred good. And not only that the chip and the botom of the cooler seem to be realy flat or evanly flat coz the termal paste was squised out by sides just a litle. And only a small amount of it remaind betwean the chip and the cooler but was spred evanly... May be i did tighten it to much :banghead:

what i'd be looking for, is areas where the paste wasnt squished.

Like if its squished perfectly on the bottom but hardly squished at the top, you know the tops not making good contact.

This is a SS of Furmark with stock cooling that run 276sec.:

Then this is with the Zalman run for 230sec.:

Here is the card with the Vf900 without the Ram sinks:

So i tryed it today, 2 times, i reseted the cooler with no luck, i have run furmark for about 25min. and the max was 119c. The cooler has good contact with the chip and the Tim was spreded. The cooler is easy to install so i doubt that i made a mistake. I dont know what is it about the Toxic but it has higher clocks and the cooler does cool it, but the cooler is conected to the graphic...but i think it has the same max RPM as conected to the matherbord.

What do you think should i take it back to the shop?
And wich cooler would fit my card?

Well I have no idea what's wrong here, you said : Good contact, full speed fan... But I can recommend another GFX cooler : The Arctic Cooling Accelero S1.
It's a FANLESS cooler that work great with the HD4850. I'm using it right now and I getting 45°C idle and 65°C load. It's pretty cheap and works great!

Those mount irons should bend a little and you should see the ati logo through the paste, then it's a good mount. Don't worry about tightening too much, that cooler doesn't work with low mount pressure (oh course nothing insate, so nothing brakes).

Though MX-2 should spread more easily than AS5 under the mount pressure. You could try and remove those rubber o-rings under there. If the core is so low that they don't allow enough pressure to be ablied. Just keep an eye that the screws don't press against the card.

They are not used in the toxic card and when I used VF900 on my x1900xt they hang in the air :)

the white paste that comes with zalman heatsinks gives results very similar if not the same to Artic ceramic, its a decent paste,
im also about to put a VF900 on my 4850 and im not too convinced, maybe a VF1000 would be a better choice,

one of the things you have to remember about thermal paste is that its ment to complete the contact, not replace it, you apply it in a circular manner on the heat sink contact surface at first, pushing it in to all the cracks and scratches, and then wipe it off, you notice that the contact surface changed color a bit, that means that the material filled most of the surface imperfections, then you do the same with the gpu core, just a small drop, but in this case, you leave a thin layer, dont wipe it off, i usualy use a piece of transparent sandwich wrapping, you know, the celofane wrapping you use for food, or a clean shopping bag, maybe a latex glove, its important that the natural oil of the skin dosnt mix with the thermal paste, most decent thermal pastes are a silver/copper/aluminium compound suspended in a mineral or silicon oil, so when stored for long periods, it will desociate and require a good shake to mix it,

also remember that some thermal pastes require a cook in period, for the heat to disipate some of the oil, thats why thermal paste seems alot thicker when you remove a heatsink thats been in use for a while, some of the older white goop even solidified and made HSF removal a real pain... anyways, preliminary results should be taken with a grain of salt, give it 2-3 days to settle in, expand in to all the cracks and settle the interface material from the solution,

I tested it for 1 day and came to the conclusion, that 1 heat pipe of the cooler (the biger one) must be broken. The litle one gets hot instantly when i test with Futrmark, the biger one dosent. They are basicly welded together but it seems that the heat isnt transferd over the big pipe fast enugh, or at all. Will take it to the shop tomorow to get a replacment and poste back some results with the new cooler.

ps:cant be the TIM coz the stock cooler is hiting 80c in Furmark after i changed it back from vf900(119c)

yea, what you describe is either incomplete contact or a broken pipe,

i dont know if the VF900 is suited for the 4850, i know sapphire mounts a similar one on the 4850 toxic, but i dont know if its stock version or a special order made for sapphire by zalman,

either way, contact zalman, even if you do find the problem, i doubt you have the means at hand to repair the heatsink,

broken heatpipe would explain the mystery. Let us know how it goes with a replacement!

I have the Toxic with the Vf 900 on it. Same as a standard version, save for a different coloured fan. It worked reasonably well on the cooling side, but I modified the wiring to run it off a fan controller. Made a big difference.

In my experience VF900cu's are not very good coolers in the fist place. Ether all of the ones I used were 'broken' or its what I already stated.
