IHS removed on dead Phenom II 940

Earlier this week I bought a dead 940 from Shadowfold for a little experimentation. Today at work it was DEAD so I got out the exacto knife and a lighter.

Some pics of the solder sanded off. I only had 220, 320, 400, and 600grit paper on hand:

Friday I'm going to try using the proc w/o the ihs to see if it will work cause when it popped off there was white shit all over the pcb so maybe some paste got in there or no telling what Shadow did to it... :roll:

Nehalem is about the same size. I want to see a Dunnington without the IHS on it. That has to be a beast (1.9 billion transistors).

It looks like that core was soldered. If you plan to run it under anything you need to get to the core. That solder is going to allow that CPU to get way too hot.

I am plaining to sand the solder, or as much as I can. I'll post pics up once I'm done with that on Fri.

I do remember we had a member curt something that sanded/lapped his opty165 core and it still worked, just be very careful.

The IHS is actually soldered to the top of the core instead of using TIM.

Unlike the old Athlon 64's and early X2's the Windsors on up, minus some Brisbane cores, actually soldered the IHS to the core. That is why I had to first take the utility blade to unbind the silicone around the IHS and then took the lighter to heat up the IHS so the solder would give.

I had to unlid my A64 3500+ a while back. Somehow the goop underneath just... "died", wasn't even that old. CPU would overheat well into 100c+ temps even idle. After the delidding all was well again.

It never got hot tho. I was using AMD OverDrive, changed a setting, saved it and it froze. Then the chip didn't boot in any of my boards..

That's why I used the lighter. It literally "Popped" off.

I did a little sanding on it this morning and 600 grit paper is making it take forever, so I'm going to pickup some 300-400 paper this morning and work on it tonight.

I'm using the same technique as lapping an IHS except I check it alot. It's funny now cause if you look in the above pictures you'll notice a "crack" on the silicone but I see nothing on the inside of the IHS so wonder if Shadow's problems were due to heat sitting right there...or the white crap all over the PCB and resistors(or whatever they are called).

glue a thick washer to each corner, as you sand it down it will keep the die nice and level

Also, after you've taken the solder off, you can lap the die with 2000 grit paper.
