This is a REFERENCE thread. The idea is to LIST and LINK to other benchmark threads on TPU and also to source websites for additional data and results tables. You are welcome to post comments on these benchmarks, post results, and suggest others.

I recently built a new video editting workstation. During this build process, I looked at different benchmarking tools to compare the performance of this machine vs. the one it replaces, a Q6600. This thread is a summary of the benchmarking tools I looked at, and which ones I recommend. There are two sections, for CPU crunch testing, and for GPU testing.

For the CPU crunch list, I have taken note of whether the benchmark scales by thread. This is important, because many CPU speedtests are single threaded and dont benefit by multicore or by HT. For some speed-demons, a single threaded bench is useful. For crunchaholics, it isnt, and a multithreaded test is needed.

There is also a soda-rating. I rate the utility with no, «, ««, ««« . Note this rating is my personal opinion, and your view may differ.

Please add your comments and experience. I will try to keep the table of links up to date.

CPU crunch
Name of benchmark | Multithreaded | TPU link | External link | Rating | Comment

Cinebench R10 | YES| none yet | http://www.maxon.net/pages/download/cinebench_e.html | ««« | Great tool for looking at BOTH single and multithread performance, and measuring the scaling for n threads vs. single thread, incl. HT. One of my favourites.

EVEREST 5 - CPU | YES| none yet | http://www.lavalys.com/ | ««« | Warning from the Everest development team - i7 results ARE NOT VALID unless using version 5 or above. A new TPU thread is needed. This test is GREAT for looking at thread scaling. I particularly like PhotoWorxx for looking at performance for intensive photoshop-like work, and FPU Mandel for double precision FPU performance.

EVEREST 5 - Memory | NO| warning - out of date | http://www.lavalys.com/ | « | Warning from the Everest development team - i7 results ARE NOT VALID unless using version 5 or above. A new TPU thread is needed. The existing thread is out of date

Fritz Chess Benchmark | YES| TPU link | http://www.jens.tauchclub-krems.at/diverses/Schach/fritz9_benchmarks.html | ««« | This test is great for looking at thread scaling. It is only marginally affected by memory bandwidth.

Geekbench | YES | TPU link | http://www.primatelabs.ca/geekbench/ | ««« | Good stuff

Generic CPU Bench | YES| none yet | not found | «« | CPU only. Doesnt (really) test memory system.

Paint.NET PdnBench 3.2 | YES| none yet | http://paintdotnet.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=21669 | ««« | This test is great for photoshop type workflows

Passmark 6.x | NO | none yet | http://www.passmark.com/ | « | It is a nice utility, but a ixed bag of CPU, memory, HDD and GPU. OK for an overall "office performance" but not useful for testing CRUNCH, nor GPU performance.

ScienceMark 2| NO| TPU link | http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/170/ | « | Interesting for memory benchmark, but all other tests are single threaded. I think the EVEREST benchmark utility is better due to multithreded nature. Also sciencemark.org is abandoned. My advice: avoid.

SuperPI mod 1.5 | NO | none yet | http://www.xtremesystems.com/pi/ | «« | Very popular with speed-demons but not with crunchaholics. Single core/thread CPU only

WinRAR | YES| none yet | http://www.rarlabs.com/ | «« | Good for looking at bottlenecks of CPU and memory system

wPrime 2.00 | YES| TPU link | http://www.wprime.net/ | «« | Good for looking at math crunch, BUT, remember to set the thread count before starting. I recommend using 32... so that the same settings will work across most computers, incl. Nehalem-EP and Dunnington.

GPU/Video Card testing
Name of benchmark | TPU link | External link | Rating | comment

3Dmark06| 404 TPU link | http://www.futuremark.com/benchmarks/3dmark06/introduction/ | «« | Great - but takes ages to download, install, and even longer to run.
3Dmark Vantage | 404 TPU link | http://www.futuremark.com/benchmarks/3dmarkvantage/introduction/ | «« | Requires DX10 (Vista and above)

Aquamark | 404 TPU link | http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=673/ | ««« | It's a good - but dated - GPU test. Quick to run but results dont scale so well with modern CPU/GPU. Possible code bottlenecks

Furmark | http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=40981 TPU link | http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/ | ««« | Great

Lightsmark 1.2 | http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=44187 | http://www.dee.cz/lightsmark/ | «« | Note this benchmark has been updated to Lightsmark 2008, so the TPU link and scoreboard is out of date

Lightsmark 2008 | TPU link | http://www.dee.cz/lightsmark/ | ««« | Superb OpenGL tested with music! so you dont get bored while testing. Music by Japanese band "In-sist"
