you would be matched up pretty even performance wise so i would go with the sm3 based x1600 pro.

yep, you are right. . . but i didn't believe you so had to check out a couple of vendors!

X800GT £141
X1600pro £106

i wouldn't invest too heavily cause you'll probably want to upgrade to a pcie mobo in the next 2 or so years anyway. theres no investment consideration.

X1600pro R530 256MB DX 9.0c gpu500 mem780 128 -bit 12 pipes (4x3)
X800GT R420 256MB DX 9 gpu475 mem900 256 bit 8pipes (8x1)

from tomshardware.com VGA charts

on paper the X1600 is better, even though it is marketed at a lower end user, simply cause its newer technology. The vendors can't reduce the price of the X800 in line.

Its like 9550 and 9600, but then people found you could upgrade the 9550 to 9800.

wrong. the x1x00 series are phasing in the 3:1 shader usit to pixel piplines. the 1600 has 4 pipe lines and 3 shader units per pipe. the x1600 should out perform the x800gt but the gtos is questionable. also if you can find a agp version of the x1600xt you will see a larger increase in performance.

the absence of shader 3 will give faster frame rates but at shader 2 quality as opposed to shader 3..

it dosnt cause the card to try and do shader 3 in software as most folks seem to think it just uses shader 2 instead.. the result being a speed up in fps and a drop in image quality..

nvidia has had it for ages ati has only just got it.. it was never used to knock ati cards in the past so i dont think it matters that much now..

i think he just wanted to decide strictly between these 2 cards and although the x800 gt in agp is good the x1600 is a little cheaper and newer and should hold him over fine till he goes pci/e. If he was say asking about GTO or a x8X0 pro card my opinion would be different but the gt has only 8 pipelines with older architecture, and regardless of the 128 bit mem bus it still is a decent overclocker(as far as the pci/e versions go not sure about agp) all other things aside the x1600 for agp is a decent choice i think. here is a forum discussing the x1660 agp http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/54445/

get a 6800GS agp.
similar price, and will outperform the living daylights outta both the x1600 pro and x800 gt.
especially if you have a card that can unlock the extra quad and vertex unit.

Yes, get 6800GS

I was about to suggest the same, but the author of the thread stated he only wanted to choose between the X800GT or the X1600, guess it has more to do with the price range of these cards.:)

I can only find an AGP version of the 256MB X1600pro by saphire using an AGP-PCIe bridge chip. the 512MB and xt variants seem to be all pcie

512 is wasted on an x1600.. u wont see any benefit from it just end up paying out more money for nothing.. 512 memory on lower end cards is just a con to extract more money from joe public.. it sounds better so they pay better..

agreed.

only cards with mammoth GPU's like the ATI 1800/1900 series or NV 7800/7900 GT/GTX's can actually benefit from that much memory to play with.

thanks for advice re: memory!

how do you think the x1600pro compares to a full pipe complement x800gto or xt?

Yes, but it has a little more to do with the memory bandwidth as well, remember the X1600's memory bus is only 128-bits wide, a real bottleneck, while cards with at least 256-bits of bandwidth would certainly get a greater benefit from having from having a memory buffer of 512 MBs in future games, cards like the X800GT at least come with a 256-bits bus...

a full pipe complement x800gto or xt is way above the X1600pro.. the right one would be nearly on par with the x1800 lower end cards..
