My XFX HD4830 adventures

I think the title says it all guys. First up, pictures

First Impressions

I gotta say the card is so damn sexy I actually put it back in its box

Even the box has a REAL sexy feel.. you just want to give it some love :eek:

One thing worth noting is that the memory chips are crudely covered, THICK thermal pads.. in other words crap. Not happy about the back of the card missing a heatsink, I'd think thats pretty crucial. XFX = cheapy bastards.

Packaging: 10/10
Its kind of a smooth matt black... its just so god damn sexy.

PCB: 10/10 (its black baby!)
Looks to be a well made PCB, not flimsy like some.

Cooling: 7/10
Lack of a proper implementation of cooling for the memory chips and at the back of the card is likely going to hamper OCing.

The XFX card comes with a 6pin splitter and a DVI to VGA adapter, before anyone asks

WARNING!!

Do NOT run the fan on the XFX cooler at 100%, its a LEAF BLOWER! 80-90% is very acceptable though.

I looked at the review for this card, the memory couldnt be OC'd at all. probably as you said, due to the inadequate ram cooling.

Also, if you can, get those little heat spreaders for the ram, they work wonders, especially if there is air moving through them. If you need some, Ive got some, ill ship them to you for free if you pay shipping (probably about $3-4)
They have really bad adhesive, so I superglued mine (yes, they do come off easy if you need to) It worked wonders for my HD4850, was able to OC the memory approx 50 MHZ more with the spreaders, and maintain a lower temperature even with the higher OC.

Thanks but I have some good heatsinks, Some Zalman ones and I can even rob my Tweakmoster heatsinks off one of the 3870s I have :cool:

Hopefully the stock cooler isn't assembled in one big metal plate, will make life easy putting some heatsinks on then.

It was just for the 4830, but they basically said the RAM was not OCable.

I was able to bump the ram on my Asus 4830 an extra 100Mhz and so far so good except the temps. On a 1680 x 1050 stability test I've hit 80 Celcius but I have no control of the fan. I have some Zalman VF900's on the way so hopefully the temp issue changes.

Tests have shown that unless temps are above 90C, not to worry at all. It is above 100 that can be damaging.

I'd never let anything I own go above 70*C. Any higher is stupid. Living things die at 60*C FFS.

A quick test with CCC reveals my memory tops at 1030MHz (2060MHz effective) so for testing purposes I will leave the memory at 1025MHz (2050MHz). No doubt the memory is getting quite hot and limiting my OC. More results to come soon

*lol* I've personally seen metals burn at 3000 degrees F (what, maybe like 2k C?) and it was still alive.

Hes right though, every card is different, the lower the temps, the better off you are. I would say anything below 80c is comfortable though.

I've never used stock cooling for longer than a test of the card (Except 8800GTX, aftermarket is rare on that). But how come the difference in temps is soooooooooo big? My 3870 and 4870 both idled at 30c and load 40c... yet stock cooling seems to hit 90-100c.

Why don't companies just take thermalright/zalmans cooling ideas and use them in stock? lol

Furmark results with memory @ 2050MHz. Seems like the HD4830 is bandwidth starved @ stock. These memory increases result in a average FPS increase of about 8% :toast:

Oh and I wouldn't let a GPU go above 68c, thats toasty enough.

I think the biggest reason the 38xx and 48xx series of stock cooling was fan profiles. I managed to find a great BIOS for my 3870 to keep it cool. And I believe you can tweak the AMD 48xx series too. For some reason they just havent set the fan profiles in the bios to spin up proerly.

My 4850 is the same, unfortunately my memory starts artifacting in GTA4 at anything above 1128.

But my card runs, mid 30's under full load.

i did 70% idle and 100% load on my 8800GTX. I mean, im gaming - the volume over-rides the noise from my desk..

GTA IV was the only thing that made me reduce my memory OC, its a great stress testing app

8800GTX is a beast tho, probably more affective as a room heater. :laugh:
