UPDATE!!!!

ok i figured out whats causing it

IF THE CARD IS OVERCLOCKED AT ALL, THE SCREENS LOCK UP

kinda stumped as to why, considering the card is factory overclocked to 680/1050. i normally run the card at 700/1100 but thats not anything im gonna notice anyways

its been running for the past 2 days now fine at factory clocks, but 5 seconds after trying to overclock it. i get the green and black screens

ati needs to fix their shyt!

Yeah, I'm glad I know this now. Probably wont get another screen then. Maybe just sell my screen and get a 32" or 37" TV.

if you can look past the bugs, such as fan speed control not working unless you manually edit a profile by hand, inability to overclock and use dual monitors, general graphical glitches in games with new driver sets (namely call of duty 5 with texture outlines around water & smoke), and the 3d clocks not changing in crossfire mode then i would say they are good cards as far as performance to price ratio

but i still think cards should 'work' before they are released

most of the graphics corruption can be solved by disabling catalyst AI. You get a performance hit, but its a fairly easy thing to turn on and off between games.

3D clocks should change in crossfire mode, unless you're in a window.

yea, but you shouldnt have to turn one thing off to fix another....anyways, glad i figured out why these cards wont do dual screens being overclocked....makes work alot easier with both screens

Pleased to hear you got it working.

Other info/suggestions.

1./ I can HOT PLUG a second screen in or out, never had a problem. I just teted this on my two systems, ATI 3850 AGP and ATI FireGL 3350 PCIe, and indeed, hot plugging is fine. There is no reason to turn off the PC to plug in/unplug a second screen! I have no idea why peeps are telling you to do so.

2./ If you dualscreen, use ultramon.com

3./ If you have issues with dual screen, consider a cheap PCI/PCIex1 card for the second screen. After all it is desktop space, not gaming space, right? (Unless you are running FSX). The nice thing about a SECOND card, is that when you game (GPU goes to 3D mode), the extra screen can still operates rather than blanking to black. Great for monitoring email/chat or sensors/temps while still in game.

Thats kinda like complaining of low performance with AA in a game that doesn't support AA though. I would deffinately try a 4850 BIOS of a later revision, I bet it will clear all your problems up.

ive never had my second screen turn off while gaming, i always keep my temp software and email running over there and it always stays on.........never had that happen with nvidia cards either

on another note.....the 9.5 beta catalysts are out....about to install them now. hope this doesnt break somethin else! its reported that the 3d clock bug is fixed now though for you crossfire users

I would like to know how these work for you. I will be xfiring some 4850's soon and if i can save myself the headache that would be awesome. You guys no of drivers to stay away from???

i beleive 9.1 are the ones with the worst reputation.

The issue i'm having is fairly simple, if you use S3 sleep mode you get visual corruption when using crossfire. Since i use sleep mode all the time, tis kinda

Okay I'll be sure to steer clear of those. I just downloaded all versions of 9.4 since I will be dual booting vista32/64. I'm snagging the beta ones also. I dont use sleep mode at all soo I think I can bypass this issue. Thanks Mussels

thats what i mean, that bug has been around for the last few driver sets......ati needs to make cards that WORK properly before releasing new products.

at times i feel like a beta tester with ati stuff even after its retail. they claim fixes and improvements with every driver release, but in order to fix one thing they break another

im not a fanboy by any means but speaking from experience, nvidia cards just worked, ati cards have always had issues for me.......i mean come on, how hard is it to fix the fan speed!!!!!!!! and why cant i overclock my card and use 2 monitors??? get it together ati!!

Well boys i know how to solve this problem...
just change yours clocks to default Ati 4850 i meen 625/993.
You may use Radeon Bios Editor 1.21 and you need to change yours clocks like this:
Clock 0 - 625/993 - its boot mode.
Clock 1 - 500/750 - its idle mode (when using 2D).
Clock 2 - 500/750 - its medium mode (used when runs video).
Clock 3 - 625/993 - its burn mode (when using 3D).
Clock 4 - 625/993 - its some UDP mode.
Clock 5 - 625/993 - its some UDP mode.
Clock 6 - 625/993 - its some UDP mode.
Clock 7 - 500/993 - its idle mode (when using 2D with 2 LCD).
Clock 8 - 500/993 - its medium mode (used when runs video with 2 LCD).
Clock 9 - 625/993 - its burn mode (when using 3D with 2 LCD).

a have same problems when i try to overclock my GPU Asus EAH4850 512Mb with 2 LCD.

im having a similar issue with ym 4850x2. Im trying to run a standard lcd off the dvi and a tv with a s-video. They both work just not atthe same time. I can only have one enabled ata time. Drove me to a point where I just gave up. I just wanted to be able to watch my shows on my tv when laying in bed.
