Motherboard: ASUS M2R32-MVP

PSU: Single 12v rail (42a) 700w PSU

Memory: 2x Corsair XMS2 (1gb each), 2x GSkill PI (2gb each) both dual channel kits all tested and working (Possible two brands of memory causing error??)

Sound: Onboard (no room for x-fi xtreme gamer with current vid cards and mobo)

Video: (2) Gigabyte 4870 1gb ddr5 Zalman type video cards

I'm pretty sure I've tried just about every single thing in these forums and other forums related to both of the problems I'm having.

1st Problem noticed, I've got a Sceptre 22" widescreen can't remember exact model off the top of my head. I was installing the 9.4 drivers after I removed the 2600pros I had and their drivers when it got to the part where it says Your screen may flicker while its installing the drivers, the screen did indeed go black, and it stayed that way until the no signal come up. I waited for quite awhile for the install to finish and hit enter (knowing it asks to reboot) the computer did reboot. Went through the post and the windows vista green loading bars being able to see but as soon as the loading bars finished the screen goes to no signal. Luckily I had an old 17" CRT laying around and a VGA to DVI adapter, plugged it in and wouldn't you know it works just fine!

And at that time I went into the CCC to see what monitor settings could be going and noticed that in the hardware part it shows both adapters but the second one is listed as "Disabled adapter" and not "linked adapter" I also saw there was no crossfire tab at all...then I began searching around the net looking for the crossfire issue first, found many many things about it and tried them all, I've tried every driver from 8.1 to 9.5, I used the drivers off the CD, I've even tried the modified drivers you can get off guru3d no luck with anything everytime its the exact same thing. Both cards are working (can switch places both work, tried in another computer and they both worked there too) everyone says its a bios problem but the cards I got came with the most recent bios gigabyte has.

Now heres where it gets weird...I read while trying to figure out the no display on LCD problem that you can use the HDMI port to get it to work so I figured I'd give it a shot, hooked up my DVI to HDMI adapter and of course I still had no display BUT looking in CCC it recognized a second monitor, it even changed from "disabled adapter" to "enabled adapter" which is weird, why is it treating it as a non crossfired card???? This is driving me nuts I really hope someone can help shed some light on this, I am upgrading my power supply and motherboard but cannot due so for about 20 days and if you enjoy gaming thats a long time. Help.

Make sure you're connecting your monitor to the top video card, not the bottom one. And what operating system and service pack are you using? Fill in your system specs, withoug knowing the complete details of your PC its impossible to give decent advice.

at this stage i suggest you uninstall any installed drivers, reboot into safe mode and run driver cleaner and remove all ATI video drivers.

Boot into windows and install the cat 9.5 drivers normally. If the second card does not work, manually install its driver via device manager.

Vista x64 Ultimate, the LCD doesn't work with the top one no display once it gets past the POST. Using a CRT with a VGA to DVI adapter plugged into the top pci-e card, 9.5 drivers are what I'm using now downloaded from techpowerup, no luck, the device manager shows it as "device is working properly" and it is using the same drivers and the primary card. And I did remove all older drivers before upgrading to 9.5, I also tried installing one card, power down, installing second card power down, adding bridge..and nothing. Not sure what else there is to do.

what service pack of vista.

what power supply, what CPU - we really are going to need the entire details of your PC to figure this out.

PSU Skytek (discontinued brand,
) I believe, I could be wrong, if I had to blame something it _would_ be this BUT it appears to be powering them just fine as both cards are working just not in crossfire.

Service Pack one. CPU is Athlon 64x2 4600+. Also not working on clean install of vista, or clean install of windows 7(Vid cards not CPU).

"not clean" install?

PSU should be ok. 42A on the 12V rail aint weak and is more than sufficient even if i've never heard of that brand.

Clean install meaning fully updated no programs installed, only drivers and the OS itself.

And yes I know the brand is sketchy but the PSU was 40 dollars and has lasted me a year so far despite all the nasty reviews it had about them dying after a week, I am upgrading to a 750w corsair in about 20 days but until then I'm stuck with this. I do appreciate any input.

I should also add no overclocking has been attempted on anything in this system nor will they be attempted.

HDMI is not the issue. my cards work in crossfire on VGA, DVI, and a HDMI adaptor.

Theres only two fields with possibilities. Software and hardware. We need to find possibilities that fit those two fields, and using logic (occams razor, for a start) organise priorities and test them.

If a blank OS that works for other people with the same hardware and same drivers doesnt work, then software is unlikely. A faulty crossfire bridge, or incompatible BIOS between the cards is still possible.

dankmn: can you check in GPU-Z if your cards have the same BIOS?

Yes both are VER011.019.000.010.029896 the most up to date bios available, and to the guy who said use VGA these cards don't have a VGA, they have HDMI, "display port", and DVI. I have two different crossfire bridges both were included with the video cards, I do have a question those, on the bridge its self it has a J1A and a J2A on it I'm guessing J1A goes to the top one correct, or is it bi-directional? And do I need 2 Bridges or just one like I have been using?

I'm not stupid I wouldn't be posting on here if it was a simple cable connection...I know how to plug stuff in just fine....
Although, I did fix the LCD no display issue, it's because the DVI cord the monitor came with is a single link...but as soon as I plugged in the VGA to the monitor then used a VGA to DVI adapter (the adapter is single link) it works EXCEPT windoze doesn't detect the monitor right I can't go above 1024x768..but I'll mess with this its fixable, the crossfire problem is something I'm not digging. Still no option for crossfire in CCC and GPU-Z says "Crossfire disabled (Unsure in vista).

motherboard may not like the card either. I know alot of boards had to release bios updates to allow for the X2 cards, maybe its something similar.

Taking a page from Mussels handbook;)

Is the mobo bios on the newest released bios?

im suspect on that psu, 42A's isnt a whole lot for 2x 4870's and the rest of the system.

and its not 700w, its 600w if im reading the label correctly, 600 is the bare minimum psu ati suggests for two 4870's, and since yours isnt a major brand, i think that may be your problem.

Hmm that is unfortunate, I have to wait 20 days to find out if the PSU is indeed my problem. I'm going to look around and see if I can find a way to hook up a second power supply just to power the hard drives, dvd drivers/burners, and fans hopefully i can find a way to do this safely

I'd recommend, if you intend to install a 2nd PSU - just connect it to your second GPU. A 600W unit by itself should be able to handle your system + 1 4870 . . . trying to run two 4870s on a 600W, though, is pushing it.

Help.

Remove the 9.4 Catalyst drivers, install the drivers from the disc that came with your cards. See if that works, it most likely will work. I don't know why it doesn't work in crossfire with other drivers. The only driver that works is the one on the CD. If it works then great, we could be on to something. Maybe there is something wrong with Gigabyte's cards that breaks them in crossfire. I am currently talking to Gigabyte tech support, hopefully this issue will be resolved. I should have went with the reference design, no more non-reference designs for me.

I tried the CD drivers, they didn't work. Those were the second drivers I tried after 9.4 didn't work, tried those. Then tried them again first after I formated and re-installed vista, when I get off work today I'm going to try something it's not going to be pretty but I'm damn sure it will work. It will at least tell me if Power is my problem...I've got a 500w antec sitting in a dead computer and I'm going to use it, if I can figure out a way to power it up without actually hooking it up to the motherboard or splicing wires just to run my drives and fans NOT the second video card the reason is because this power supply isn't going to be turning on and off with the computer it will have its own on and off and I don't want there to be a chance I will have the video card running while the other one is off and vice/versa.
I will post a picture of my frankenputer if it actually work so you can all have a laugh at the disgusting mess of wires my case will become MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

You're calling gigabyte? Do they speak english? :p
They have the WORST translators...their GPU program has some awesome engrish.

:eek:Ialso ran into this problem and most have, iam using the m4a79 deluxe, like he says uninstall and reinstall all newest cataylest (full install) save, shut down remove one card the bottom one, restart and enter bios, reset bios to default.boot up and install ccc, remember u must have .net installed also. after installing ccc shut down reinsert other card hook up the bridges, and reboot. this worked for me but make sure ur mobo supports crossfire,or look at a bios update.

Sounds like it could work, will give it a shot only a couple hours left of work  then I can go mess around with the fun stuff, and yes my mobo supports crossfire, it's decent, I am upgrading that as well still unsure of what to go with though, there's a lot of motherboards out there.
